The Bacolod Foodie Scene (Part 2)

Last October 2012, I once again, had the opportunity to visit my province. This was my second time for the year. I wanted to visit my lola and while already there, maximize my stay! Yahoo!

For my first time, I made a quick rundown of the gastro feast that I had for that trip. June 2012 Bacolod Foodie Scene was all about good food, even the simplest ones.

For my October trip, here are my delights:

1) TAMARIND THAI RESTAURANT
Address: Central Walk Robinson, Mandalagan,Bacolod City
All-time fave Pad Thai for P200! Their version is one that I liked and the serving size was more than enough for me and my cousin
Bottomless Lemon Iced Tea for only P60. Such a winner! I was so thirsty and this definitely  helped relieve my parched throat. The sweetness provided me the sugar to keep me energetic all throughout the night that I was busy walking the jampacked street of Lacson for the last night of the Masskara Festival
Fish and Mango Salad for P150.  Surprisingly refreshing to the palate. The sourness balances the other ingredients such as the battered fish cutlets, peanuts, etc. It's a must-try!
Thai Spring Rolls. Very crispy but tastes ver ordinary. Ordinary but good.

Cozy ambiance inside. Green and red colors are preferred in their color scheme.
It was a good dining experience.  Glad to have tried you out.
2) CALEA
Address:  Ground Floor, Lourdes-C Bldg., 14th Lacson Street, Bacolod City
CAKE #1. Unfortunately, I was not able to get the names of the cakes but This was good. =)
CAKE #2.  Subtle and simple if you are after cake traits like this.
CAKE #3. Yummmmmm!!!
Aside from their bestselling cakes, they also have a variety of food choices to compliment their cakes.  We also got a generous serving of their Clubhouse Sandwich and Pasta Puttanesca. Price range? Very reasonable.
3) BONGBONG'S PASALUBONG'S PIAYA
Address: (Near SM Bacolod..I forgot the location)
Bongbong's! My all-time favorite pasalubong house. It just doesn't feel right for me to buy others. For me, this is just THE one! And my most-ordered pasalubong..their Piaya.  It is a flat unleavened bread filled with mozcovado (raw) sugar. Childhood memories are filled with my lunch box with 2-3pcs of Piaya inside.
So this is how it's done...
4) GRILL GURU
Address: Kamunsil St.corner C.L. Montelibano Avenue, 6100 Bacolod City
Grilled Buffalo Wings. A certain kick of spiciness builds the flavor for this appetizer/viand.
Golden-fried Cumin Calamares
Garlic Cream Dory. This was my order and I liked it. I like creaminess in almost any dish and this one just whetted my appetite for more. Its simple yet I don't know how to prepare the same at home. Haha! How I wish I knew how.
Grilled Pork Teriyaki
Grill Guru Pork Belly. This was not my order but I also loved this.
My kind relatives who were responsible for this treat. Next time, it's going to be on my tab, ok?! So much thanks!  I loved this experience.
This, I guess, was a home of somebody then converted it to what it is right now.  This place can hold functions  outdoors and it has a pool too.
5) FAMILY-COOKED MEALS
But of course, home-cooked meals are the best! =)
My lola Remy never fails to show her love to me even if she's not the ones who personally attends to it.  Take this for example, she knew what I liked eating and she had this Beef Steak made for me. Just for me. Love you, lola!
This was tops for me. I finished this all! I really missed this. She instructed  teh person who cooked it on how it has to be done, her style. So that was why, even if it was not lola who prepared it, I can still taste and feel that it was her who did this for me. =)
My relatives (same relatives who treated me to Grill Guru) who are gifted in cooking invited me to have dinner at their home. I did not refuse, I came, of course, after all, my brother raved about their cooking all the time when he stayed in Bacolod.  And look what they whipped up in such short notice (chicken excluded as it was store bought, haha!) But our Korean-inspired dinner was so good that I took home some of it. Now I'm craving for it.
There it is! So pretty! Until next time!
Well, Bacolod never fails to impress, right? It's a foodie's haven. It's a melting pot of sorts based from the different cuisines that I have tried here.

On my next visit, it will be a different set of places again. Watch for it! =)

Masskara Festival: A Definition of a City

Negros Occidental's most famous festival...the Masskara Festival!

Bacolod City, or otherwise known as the "City of Smiles", surely made people smile every October as they celebrate this festival. This event is one of the factors that defined Bacolod City into what it is right now. They are synonymous with each other:
Bacolod City = Masskara Festival
Masskara Festival = Bacolod City

This is my province and sure am proud of it. I have been here years before during the festival, however, since I was there for work, I did not get to enjoy it. I just stayed backstage during the entire length of the show where the artist that I was handling was a part of.

So last 2012, I sure was happy to finally had the chance to experience this very famous event. I arrived there on the last day, so I knew I was running against time. Luckily, I had enough rest after my arrival then had my kind cousin pick me up and went to the Bacolod Public Plaza where my eventful night started.

Here are my experiences in photos:

The vibrant logo of 2012  made by 9 emerging artists.
A street parade before the sun sets.
At the Bacolod Public Plaza
The reason why we left the plaza right away..too many people filled the brim of the place.  I can only hear the activities and the performances but I cannot see them. Well, these people arrived way earlier  than me so I give it to them. Just a bit bitter. Haha!
A group of dancers in their colorful garbs.
If I can only climb that tree if its not full of people.. I think I would have done it. It woud be fun..and scary! Haha! So since I cannot do exactly that, off we went to the mall..SM Bacolod..to see awesome-looking masks on display

Masks on display at SM Bacolod

These masks are all wonderful. If these were not smiling, I would have been scared of them as I am not really fond of masks. Good thing they are giving a friendly smile.

Spot the not: Which is real and fake? Left image or the right one? Haha!

Loved these colorful works of art!

Masks on display at Robinson's Place Central CityWalk
The vibrancy is contagious, I tell you! It's a wonderful time of year to be here in Bacolod City.

That sure is a lot of masks!
Sponsored by ABS-CBN and Robinson's Place Bacolod.. a wide and colorful array of what else..more masks! =)

All are very beautifully made and oh-so-colorful, right?
The Street scene!
The most fun part! The Bacolodnons converging at the Lacson St.  to  enjoy the sights, shows and the people all gathered in this central location
Free shows like this can be found all around
The beautiful mask parked at the lawn beside my favorite cake shop..Calea! It was huge and so girly and everyone wanted to have their photo taken right beside it. Take me for instance, haha!
I really loved this.

Thanks, Merci pasalubong! I will give you a try next time but for now I am still loyal to Bongbong's pasalubong. Peace!
Giant Masskara Puppets
Similar to that of Angono, Rizal's Higantes but the Masskara's puppets are more modern like they have a wide variety of characters derived from Toy Story, Korean icons, robots, etc.

Majica Masskara
Per www.themasskarafestival.com, the inspiration for 2012 are figures from the sea and mountain  as it highlights the geographical gift of Bacolod as a city where the mountains and seas meet.

Before heading home, it sure would be nice to bring some souvenirs of this memorable festival
HISTORICAL FACTS: The festival first began in 1980 during a period of crisis. The province relied on sugar cane as its primary agricultural crop, and the price of sugar was at an all-time low due to the introduction of sugar substitutes like high fructose corn syrup in the United States. It was also a time of tragedy; on April 22 of that year, the inter-island vessel Don Juan carrying many Negrenses, including those belonging to prominent families in Bacolod City, collided with the tanker Tacloban City and sank. An estimated 700 lives were lost in the tragedy.
In the midst of these tragic events, the city's artists, local government and civic groups decided to hold a festival of smiles, because the city at that time was also known as the City of Smiles. They reasoned that a festival was also a good opportunity to pull the residents out of the pervasive gloomy atmosphere. The initial festival was therefore, a declaration by the people of the city that no matter how tough and bad the times were, Bacolod City is going to pull through, survive, and in the end, triumph. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MassKara_Festival)

So there, now we have a better understanding and appreciation for this famous festival. I hope to go here again this 2013. Wish me luck! =)
